You’ll hear talk in coming days before Monday’s NFL trade deadline of the San Diego pass rusher and the Washington Redskins. But, that’s all it will be – talk.

Merriman is from Upper Marlboro, Md., about 15 minutes from the stadium. He was a star at the University of Maryland and has business interests in College Park. Merriman spends a chunk of free time in the area to see family and friends.

Merriman has talked in previous months of wanting to sign with Washington in 2010 when becoming a free agent.  He grew up a Redskins fan and wears No. 56 in honor of his mentor – LaVar Arrington. Certainly, it would be Redskins owner Dan Snyder’s style to ink the promising but controversial and injury-prone defensive end. He has been suspended four games for steroids use.

San Diego is weighing a trade for Merriman for a mid-rounder rather than getting nothing at season’s end. He’s not a real favorite of management anyway.

But Washington has enough problems without adding another player at a position it doesn’t need. If Merriman was an offensive lineman, Washington could snap him up, but they’re better off saying pass at this time. The moment just isn’t right.

If this is true, could he please be signed so we can have a linebacker play his position and put Orakpo on the line where he belongs? this seems to me like a good idea that way the defense will be set for the new coach and def. coordinator that replaces the ones we have now.
